The Basic Dental Exam Kit: Tools, Uses, and the Material Behind Them
Every dental checkup starts with the same familiar set of small instruments laid out on a tray, and that set is usually what’s known as a basic dental exam kit. It’s not flashy, but it does the essential work of letting a dentist see, feel, and measure what’s really going on inside a patient’s mouth. This article walks through what a typical kit contains, where forceps fit into the picture, and why stainless steel remains the go-to material for instruments like these.
Basic Dental Tools
A standard dental exam kit typically contains a mirror with handle, an explorer, a periodontal probe, an examination scaler, and tweezers. Each piece plays its own specific role:
- The mirror with handle gives the dentist a clear view of areas that would otherwise be impossible to see directly, like the back of the molars or the underside of the tongue.
- The explorer has a sharp, pointed tip used to feel along the surface of a tooth, checking for soft spots, cracks, or early signs of decay that might not be visible to the eye.
- The periodontal probe is a blunt, marked instrument used to measure the depth of the space between the gum and the tooth, which helps identify early gum disease before it becomes a bigger problem.
- The examination scaler is used to gently remove small deposits of plaque or tartar from the tooth surface during a routine check.
- The tweezers help the dentist pick up and place small items — cotton rolls, gauze, or tiny fragments — without needing to use fingers inside the patient’s mouth.
Together, these five tools make up the backbone of nearly every dental exam, giving a dentist everything needed to assess a patient’s oral health before deciding whether any further treatment is required.

Uses of Forceps
While forceps aren’t always included in a basic exam kit, they become essential the moment a procedure moves beyond simple diagnostics. Forceps are used to grip and hold objects with far more precision and control than fingers alone could manage — whether that means positioning gauze, handling small instruments, or, in a surgical context, gripping and removing a tooth once it has been sufficiently loosened. Their design varies depending on the job: some have fine, delicate tips for gentle handling, while others are built with a firmer grip for extractions. In many ways, forceps represent the bridge between basic examination and more involved dental work.
Why Stainless Steel?
Nearly every metal instrument in a dental exam kit is made from stainless steel, and that’s no accident. Stainless steel is a type of steel — an alloy of iron and carbon — with enough chromium content added to give it real corrosion resistance, protecting the surface of the metal from rust even after repeated sterilization. This sets it apart from ordinary carbon steel, which lacks that same protective structure.
Most instrument-grade stainless steels come from the austenitic stainless steel family, prized for good corrosion resistance and ease of welding. Common grades include 304, along with type 316 and 316 SS, sometimes labeled 304L or SAE 304L, and known under older trade names like Staybrite or Nirosta. This chrome-nickel steel typically follows an 18/8 ratio of chromium and nickel, and is often grouped under the broader label of chromium steels.
Other types of stainless steel exist too, each with different properties. Martensitic stainless steel offers high strength after heat treatment, which is useful for cutting edges like the tip of an explorer, though it has somewhat less corrosion resistance than austenitic grades. Ferritic stainless steel brings magnetic properties and a lower cost, while duplex stainless steel combines a mixed crystal structure for added resistance to crevice corrosion and localized corrosion — more common in industrial equipment than in small dental tools, but a useful example of the wide range of grades within the stainless steel family.
